Mansfield multi-talented athlete Jessica Otto figured to be a hot commodity when it came time for colleges and universities throughout the region to start inking track athletes to scholarships, but on Tuesday the 17-year old Mansfield senior became just the fifth Mansfield athlete all time and the first in the modern era to sign with a Division I school.
Otto, who excels in track, basketball and volleyball signed an NCAA Letter of Intent on Tuesday to become a member of the Arkansas State Lady Red Wolves track team where she is expected to compete as a heptathlete for the Jonesboro school.
She is among the newly recruited class of ASU head coach Lon Badeaux, who heads up the track and field program at ASU.
Otto, who is preparing to enter her fourth competitive season for the Lady Tigers in track and field has been an important element in three consecutive indoor and outdoor state titles for Mansfield.. Through her first three seasons, Otto has earned ten individual state titles as a member of six state championship teams.
She has earned six All State designations and was named the indoor state MVP distinction last year. In 2009, she set state Class 3A record in the 60 meter hurdles (9.80) and the high jump (“5’4”) and also owns three other school records in the 300 meter hurdles (47.07) and as a member of a 2008 4X400 meter relay team (1:53.40) and a 2009 4 X100 meter shuttle squad (51.86).
The 5’6 1/2” senior has also earned All District and All State honors in volleyball and was an integral part of a Mansfield team that finished that won the Class 3A state crown earlier this school year.
In addition, she was a key player on a Mansfield basketball team that finished among the top eight teams in the classification a year ago.
